Gantry Cranes

A gantry crane is a top-running crane system—either single or double girder—that uses end trucks supported by legs running at floor level. These cranes can be fixed leg or single leg (semi-gantry) designs. Fixed leg cranes operate on rails embedded in the floor, while single leg cranes combine a floor-mounted end truck with one that runs along an overhead runway beam. Gantry cranes typically span up to 55 feet, have a lifting capacity up to 15 tons, and stand at heights of 30 feet or less.

Gantry cranes offer powerful material handling without the need for building attachment, making them ideal for both fixed and flexible applications. If the coverage area is not predetermined, a portable gantry crane may be the best fit. These units are typically mounted on caster wheels and designed for compactness, allowing them to operate in tight spaces and be quickly disassembled, relocated, and stored as needed.

For more permanent setups, a fixed leg gantry crane uses two end trucks that run on floor-mounted rails, with structural legs supporting the bridge beam(s). Another common style is the single leg or semi-gantry crane, which features one end truck running on the floor and another on an overhead runway beam. AFE Crane offers gantry crane systems with a variety of leg configurations and customization options to meet specific capacity, height, and workspace requirements—indoors or out—while ensuring stability, safety, and long-term reliability.

Customization Options for Gantry Cranes

Gantry cranes can be tailored to meet specific operational needs, providing enhanced flexibility, mobility, and performance. Various customization options allow for optimal efficiency in diverse environments, from indoor manufacturing facilities to outdoor industrial sites.

Fixed or Adjustable Height

Choose between a fixed-height design for consistent operation or an adjustable-height option to accommodate different lifting requirements and clearance restrictions.

Adjustable Spans

Modify the beam span to fit specific work areas, ensuring the crane can efficiently cover various load-handling zones.

Motorized vs. Manual Movement

Choose manual operation for cost-effective, light-duty applications or motorized travel for improved efficiency, precision, and ease of handling heavier loads.

Wheel Design

Select from different wheel materials and configurations, such as polyurethane, steel, or V-groove wheels, to optimize movement across various surfaces and track systems.

Leg Configuration

Customize the gantry’s leg structure to include single or multiple legs depending on stability requirements & space constraints.

Track and Rail Systems

Add guide tracks or rails to ensure smooth and consistent movement, especially for applications requiring repetitive travel.

Outdoor and Corrosive-Resistant Coatings

Select weather-resistant finishes and specialty coatings to protect against harsh environments, such as marine or chemical exposure.

FAQs

A gantry crane is a type of overhead crane that features legs supporting the bridge, allowing it to operate without being attached to a building structure. It moves along wheels or tracks and is ideal for indoor and outdoor material handling applications.

Gantry cranes offer several advantages, including:

  • Freestanding design – No need for overhead runway beams.
  • Portability – Can be moved and positioned where needed.
  • Versatile applications – Used indoors, outdoors, and in temporary work areas.
  • Cost-effective solution – Requires less structural support than bridge cranes.

An overhead bridge crane is a permanently installed system that moves along parallel runways mounted to a building’s structure, making it ideal for indoor use in factories and warehouses where maximizing floor space and handling heavy loads is essential. In contrast, a gantry crane is a self-supporting structure with legs that run on wheels or rails, allowing it to be used in outdoor environments, temporary job sites, or locations without existing support structures. The main difference is that bridge cranes rely on the building for support, while gantry cranes are freestanding and portable.
