AFE Crane collaborated with a manufacturer in the hydraulic systems industry to design and implement a safer and more efficient solution for their testing process. The customer, a producer of precision hydraulic components used in various industries, required a replacement for an existing hand-operated jib system. The original system was inadequate for their specialized needs, which involved testing high-temperature parts and applying lateral forces during the process.
Project Challenges
The customer’s testing process involved heating components to high temperatures in a kiln and then applying side forces to the parts to evaluate their performance. Their previous jib system was unable to reliably handle the parts, particularly under conditions of lateral force, creating significant safety concerns and inefficiencies. Additionally, the system needed to be portable and free-standing without requiring a permanent foundation, as flexibility in placement was a key requirement. The new design also had to minimize part movement during handling, as swinging parts posed a risk of damaging both the components and the kiln.
The AFE Crane Solution
AFE Crane engineered a custom portable, free-standing, foundationless jib crane tailored to the customer’s specific requirements. The design featured a robust steel frame that not only supported the jib crane but also served as a platform for the kiln, eliminating the need for additional infrastructure and improving overall efficiency. A longer vertical mast was incorporated to support the jib’s rotating section, with four heavy-duty rollers at the base of the mast to transfer lateral forces into the stationary structure, ensuring stability and resistance to side forces.
A specialized fixture holder was added to the jib, allowing the customer’s fixturing to be securely mounted. The fixture included integrated rollers to eliminate part swing during handling, which prevented damage to the parts and the kiln while safely transferring lateral forces during testing. High-quality materials and precision components were selected to ensure the system’s durability under extreme heat and its ability to handle parts with accuracy and reliability.
