Overview
A leading biofuels company required a robust material handling solution to support the loading and unloading of large drums from a material processing machine. The system needed to accommodate a 7.5-ton crane capable of handling significant vibrational loads generated during processing operations. To meet these requirements, the company partnered with AFE Crane to design and implement a freestanding crane system integrated with a heavy-duty steel platform.
Project Challenges
The primary challenge was developing a system that could support both the lifting operations and the significant vibrational forces created by the processing machines. The platform needed to be structurally reinforced to handle these forces while seamlessly integrating with the crane system. Additionally, ensuring worker safety while accessing and operating the equipment was a top priority.
The AFE Crane Solution
AFE Crane designed and installed a freestanding crane system to facilitate the efficient movement of large drums. To provide a stable base for the processing machines, AFE Crane also engineered and constructed a reinforced steel platform. The platform was built to withstand heavy vibrational loads, utilizing large support beams with flanges up to ¾ inches thick. It included numerous coped beams and heavy gusseted machine base seat weldments to securely bolt the machines in place.
To optimize load transfer and maintain structural integrity, the platform was directly integrated with the freestanding crane runway. This design ensured that all loads were effectively transferred to the floor through the crane structure columns.
AFE Crane also prioritized worker safety in the design. The platform was surrounded by fall protection railings, and a man ladder with a fall protection guard was installed to allow safe access. Additionally, custom-cut floor grating was incorporated to meet the client’s specific operational needs.
Project Execution
To streamline on-site installation and minimize delays, AFE Crane pre-assembled portions of the platform at their fabrication facility before shipment. This proactive approach allowed for a smoother and more efficient assembly process at the client’s site. Once on location, the expert installation team completed the final assembly, ensuring all structural and safety elements were securely in place.
